Male crab sacrifices himself to stop a fisherman from capturing his "wife"; he rewards the crab's loyalty with an unexpected act of kindness (Video)

Whether it was an act of love or pure instinct, this brave crab's gamble perfectly paid off.

What is your first thought when you think of crabs? A seafood boil, perhaps? Big claws, a pinched toe from accidentally stepping on one in the sand - probably something along those lines. Not even in your first five thoughts is the idea of crab love or a crab willing to sacrifice themselves for their current mate. Although crabs do not mate for life, some species of crabs do engage in "pair guarding", where the male crab will protect his "wife" from danger or other males. Whether or not it's based on love, it's still kind of sweet, especially when you see how it plays out in our video below.

A fisherman noticed a crab hiding in the sand, and when he went to grab it, her male leaped out from its hiding place to pull her back. The fisherman noticed the crab's loyalty, sacrificing himself to keep her from being captured, and decided to go search for his meal elsewhere. He even gave them some of his bait so they could have a romantic dinner after this scary experience.

So now, you can think of crabs not just as a tasty dinner slathered in butter, but also as selfless and courageous crustaceans. Respect!

For the male crab, this moment quite literally was the difference between life and becoming part of someone's dinner. You don't see animals, especially crustaceans, acting against their self-preservation very often. That's because their life is built on survival, unlike our cushy and (relatively) relaxing lives on the surface. We don't have any natural predators hunting for us 24/7, but they do. It's a fish-eat-fish world out there, but not for this crabby guy. He said, “Not today!”

Most fishermen would have taken this opportunity to catch both crabs, but it seems like he was a nice guy to let them go. There are plenty of crabs in the ocean, if you get what we're saying. It also helps that this video went viral on ‘X’, so he probably got a lot more fame out of posting this video than he would have for just catching and eating them.
